Driving Sustainable Development in North East India
The North Eastern Council Secretariat (NEC) is the nodal regional planning and development body for the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. Established in 1971 under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, NEC functions under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Government of India. The council is responsible for coordinating economic and social development initiatives across the eight northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
Headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya, the NEC formulates regional development plans, funds infrastructure projects, promotes connectivity, supports education and healthcare initiatives, strengthens tourism, and facilitates sustainable socio-economic growth in the North Eastern Region. The council works closely with state governments, central ministries, academic institutions, and development agencies to accelerate regional development and improve quality of life.
